A Real Live Hero
by Samantha Stone and Maya Kurien

At 10:00 on September 11, the kids of PS183 were unaware of what danger took place that morning. Throughout the day, parents rushed from work to pick up their kids. "Mommy, what happened?" "Dad, I was in the middle of Free Time", were some of the things parents of New York (and everywhere else heard. Some worried parents all around New York were too afraid to tell their children the truth. September 11th was a shock to everybody. Although most of us didn't know about the horror, one team did.

When Bear's owner, Captain Scott Shields (former student of PS 183) heard, the amazing duo immediately rushed to the scene. Shields and his dog, Bear, risked their own lives to try and save the lives of others. Therefore, they are real heroes of New York. We never noticed that before the attack. We stood in line for hours to get our favorite movie star's autograph, but now we wait to get autographs from EMS workers, firemen and other heroes of New York. A few months later Captain Shields and his gifted dog came to visit our school. We were so thankful we were speechless. He answered all of our questions and explained what happened. I was so amazed that a real hero was a graduate at our school. I guess that means that when we grow up, we can all be heroes too.
